'Freddie Gilroy & the Belsen Stragglers'

Freddie Gilroy & the Belsen Stragglers image
‘Freddie Gilroy and the Belsen Stragglers’ a steel sculpture by Ray Lonsdale depicts an old man wearing a cloth cap & overcoat sitting looking out to sea and is based on a retired miner friend of the sculptor, who was one of the first soldiers to relieve the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp at the end of World War II. The sculpture represents all the normal people that were pulled out of an ordinary life and forced into a very extraordinary and dangerous one during the World Wars.

"They said for king and country
we should do as we were bid,
They said old soldiers never die
but plenty young ones did."

The inscription on the sculpture's plaque.
